Extraordinary. The fire chief in charge of fighting the Grenfell inferno says she wouldn't change the fire brigade’s response - despite the fact that the deadly cladding meant that the standard “Stay Put” policy needlessly cost dozens of lives that night.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-45666960# …

You're blaming the fire service for people dying in a building that wasnt safe for human residence in the first place.

No, fire safety experts giving evidence at the Grenfell Inquiry are blaming fire chiefs for making bad decisions on the night that cost more lives. Or is that too complicated for you?

In a submission that will support the fire brigade’s position that it was not responsible for the failings of the “stay put” policy, Lane stressed it was “a design condition and … not a fire brigade policy” Taken from a Guardian article. She didn't blame the fire chiefs at all

The FB abandoned the stay put policy some hours after the fire took hold. How could they do that if it wasn’t their policy?

It was a building regulation design "policy" of compartmentalisation... nobody in their right mind would expect LFB to predict the scenario that unfolded that night.

The FB didn’t have to predict it. It was happening right in front of their eyes. The fire chief could have and should have changed policy sooner in the light of the fire spreading up the building. Not quite sure what this has got to do with my integrity. But hey ho.

You should have been in charge that night Julia. I'm sure you would have had everyone from Grenfell out in tact in no time. It would take someone as switched off to human catastophe as you are to have dealt with it like a walk in the park and to get everything just right.

It has to do with the fact that you don’t know what you’re talking about. Are you a trained and experienced firefighter? Were you involved in evacuation or fire management policy before Grenfell happened...? Are you responsible for people’s safety and ultimately their lives...?

I'm sure with perfect hindsight LFB will learn lessons from this. Fact remains that telling people to leave their flats would have cost lives - possibly more lives. It's simply shamefully wrong to try and apportion blame to LFB chiefs faced with this impossible task

Maybe the council who allowed the cladding to go up 'right in front of their eyes' and ignored with their own ears people's pleas that the building was not safe years before the fire are the ones who should have responded faster, and with conscience.

          1. Trouble with Grendel, it was designed with a single lane stairway on the premise that the flats were self contained fire proof units - so stay put was the correct policy on that basis.

          2. By changing the design of the building to make the windows part of the cladding, and so making the flats part of the combustible area - the cancel unknowingly created a death trap for which the FB had no knowledge.
