I sometimes think the main problem with the dominance of Oxbridge PPE/History in British politics isn't elitism, but the weekly tutorial. We're governed by people who are good in an essay crisis. We need people who got graded on the coursework.

Er, as a PPEist I had to write two essays a week on entirely different topics and then discuss them in a tutorial for an hour with, often, a world renowned expert on the topic. It focuses the mind somewhat. And it’s a damn sight more work than most students have to do.

Didn't you learn, as I did, that you can distract a bored world renowned expert for an hour by leading with controversial opinion and a usefully out of context quotation?

Absolutely. Quite a talent, and one that’s come in handy over the years. My friends at non-Oxbridge unis did about a tenth of the work I did, and I was a layabout. Nowt wrong with a PPE degree

Agree that it's a useful skill, and there's nothing wrong with the degree or those who have it. It's just that at the moment I feel we need more spods in power.

The reason Britain is badly run. The leaders are essayists. No match for the French Enarques and German Engineer-Drs.

My mum interviewed for maths at Oxford, but they said she should do PPE. She didn’t know what PPE was, so she ended up at KC London doing maths like she wanted. She could have been PM! And no me to put up with either.
