Yes, but the result of the 1975 referendum (to remain in the EEC) was implemented. The result of the 2016 referendum (to leave the EU) has not yet been implemented. So it’s not *quite* the same thing, is it @Baddiel ?https://twitter.com/Baddiel/status/1045435161012326401 …

People say that another vote on Brexit would not respect the result of the 2017 referendum, but then again, the result of the 2017 referendum did not respect the result of the 1975 referendum.

To use the 'logic' of the #Remain camp, it is worth noting that the 1975 In vote was endorsed by only 43.3% of the electorate.

For balance, it’s also worth noting that only 37.44% of the electorate voted Leave in 2016. I’m not sure what this has to do with anything - a result of a referendum is a result, no matter the turnout.

I quite agree, but there are many oin the #Remain side who claim that as less than 50% of the electorate voted #Leave the result should be invalid. I am just using their own logic to show how wrong they are

Well there’s an argument a threshold should’ve been written in, yet it wasn’t. If Remain want to ask real questions on validity, they should focus on campaign spending and the vagueness of the question that now has Johnson, Farage et al trying to define Brexit after the fact

There was a proposal at the Select Committee for a super majority, but this was refused by Cameron and Lidlington. It was a simple one vote majority winner takes all vote. Those were the rules set by a firmly #remain PM

It was refused on the grounds that it was an *advisory* referendum - which suddenly, once leave won, became anything but. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DHvtWt9XcAAtmSH.jpg …

It became legally binding after the Supreme Court ruling and the Parliamentary vote. It was advisory, and the Government took the advice.

We knew (and voted on) the exact terms for joining in 1975. We currently do not know (and are being denied a vote on) the exact terms of leaving. Doesn’t seem right to me. Where’s the informed consent? #PeoplesVote

We had already joined in 1975 and information on what we were voting for or against was almost none existent. It was also a trade organisation not a political one. Impossible to compare the two. On the scant info I voted for first time. Not being duped twice.

If I remember correctly, in 1975, the Gov. told us the CM was for jobs/trade only, it wouldn't affect our sovereignty. We were lied to then, here's what they actually knew & kept hidden for 30 years. http://eutruth.org.uk/fco30.html

1975 referendum was to join a trading Common Market. No voter imagined this arrangement would be allowed by MPs to morph into membership of a European Union Superstate run by unelected bureaucrats at the behest of Germany & France.2016 referendum is ‘chalk & cheese’.No comparison

Those of us who voted against #Remaining in the EEC in 1975, accepted the result of that referendum & waited over 40 years to have another say. We expect the Government to carry out the instruction of the electorate in the 2016 #EURef & take us fully out of the #EU, @Baddiel.
