Jaw-dropping study of the extent of left-wing bias in top U.S. universities. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by ratios of 30:1, 33:1, 44:1 and 48:1 in Theater, Music, Sociology, and English, respectively. http://bit.ly/2oYwyxe pic.twitter.com/9uWRa7lIog

That is not in itself evidence of bias, Toby. If they are fair-minded and objective. The obvious problem is the high likelihood of group-think. But you can't just post a graph to prove that.

Hold on a minute. If any other workplace is full of, say, middle aged white men, the diversity police insist that’s bad as they must hold the same views. But if a university is full of people who all hold the same view, you don’t think there’s anything to be concerned about?

Let's go back to Toby's original tweet, which claimed the existence of an affiliation disparity was itself evidence of bias (presumably in teaching). It isn't. It may however be a matter of concern. OK?

There’s also the fact that graduates in the U.S., Britain and France have become progressively more likely to vote for left-wing parties as viewpoint diversity has diminished. See this table from @PikettyLeMonde’s paper on subject http://piketty.pse.ens.fr/files/Piketty2018.pdf …pic.twitter.com/l3qfKRaV96

I’m not sure what you’re saying here, T. The tendency towards political polarisation by geographical area (as happens in the USA) seems a bigger problem for social cohesion.

My point is that the drift leftwards of university graduates over the past half century has coincided with the drift leftwards of university staff. Not conclusive evidence that university teaching is politically biased, but what else would explain the change in voting patterns?

That is a ridiculous assertion @JuliaHB1! Diversity concerns are related to gender, race, etc. Political views are not relevant or protected.

You do understand that one of the these things is not like the other one, AND that being of a certain political persuasion as others doesn't mean you "hold the same view" as they do." (Not all people who voted for Brexit/Trump are racist, but all racists voted for Brexit/Trump)

there's plenty of ideological diversity in academia, it's just that people who read books tend not to be conservatives, you can't blame academics & students for that. being a conservative in academia is like being a flat-earther in nasa.

2nd point - the disparity is either because lefties are more intelligent or more inclined to use their intelligence for the benefit of others. Or probably somewhere in between. I really don’t understand the relevance of the politics of academics lecturing in physics for example
