And woe betide a footballer saying he is ”sick as a parrot” after losing a game. What if someone who hears that comment once had a pet macaw that got poorly and died?

Just switch Boris Johnson's name with Jeremy Corbyn and ask yourself if the media would have given him such an easy ride? Of course they're 'only' words but who is anyone to say how a mother whose kids were caught up in a terrorist act should react?
-
Corbyn would have faced far more criticism but only because he has spent a lifetime standing alongside and praising terrorists. Boris has many faults but I’m not sure he’s done that.
-
Yeah, whatever happened to that Mandela fella the Young Tories used to want to hang so badly they had T shirts drawn up?
-
And the relevance of that is....?
-
Whilst Corbyn protested against apartheid Young Tories were calling for Mandela to be hanged. I think the relevance is obvious set against your 'praising terrorist' jibe.
-
And who is anyone to offer any words to a mother whose kids have been caught up in a terrorist act just because they're not politically expedient to you?

I get what you mean but what he said is pretty vile
-
Do I seriously need to explain? You’re an intelligent woman.
-
Yes I am and yes you do.

Alrighty then!! Because first came his “joke” about the niqab. Then came today’s outburst. It’s the start of a worrying trend. I don’t (yet) believe BoJo is Islamophobic but he’s seen what traction anti-Semitism gained JC in his party. 1/
-
First, his article was not Islamophoic. He was defending (in my view, wrongly) the right of women to wear the niqab. He is entitled to use whatever words he wants.
-
Yes he did. Then ruined it all with the letterbox analogy. He’s started quacking like a duck. I hope he doesn’t start walking like one.
-
But what is vile about his metaphor?

My husband’s mum was killed in a car crash when he was 9. He hates the phrase ‘car crash’ interview. So do I. However we are all offended at times. Boris could have chosen his words more wisely, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t fit to hold high office.
