No. They should have been banned in schools long ago. The tech bosses in Silicon Valley send their kids to schools that ban phones. Maybe they’re onto something, huh?https://twitter.com/Telegraph/status/1036992087105916928 …

I think we should go further. Under 16s should only be allowed phones that can call and text. No cameras, internet and social media. Takes the pressure off those in charge be it parents, guardians or teachers.

Why do kids need phones in school? We did not even have a pay phone in school. You are there to learn - not keep up with your social life.

In a rural secondary school a mobile phone is considered a necessity. The way to deal with this is to ban the use of a phone in the classroom with the threat of confiscation until the end of the day, This works fine. Make the children responsible.

I'm sorry, but human beings survived as children in rural areas before the advent of the mobile phone, so they are not a necessity.

I agree. We didn't have a phone in our house until I was in my mid-teens (mid-1970s), but expectations move on. There was a time when having access to the internet was not seen as a necessity, I would argue that it is now.

Can't believe this is even a debate. 15 mins around a teenager shows how distracted they are by them and they have no use at a school.

The House of Commons set a poor example, most are using their phones or tablets during even the most serious debates .

Why can't they surrender the phone at school office at start of day and collect at end of day? 🤔

We used to use school office phone for emergencies. We weren't even allowed calculators it was provided when needed. Education system was great. Now kids thinks YouTube is a career, what a waste.

Although I retired as a Headteacher 17 yrs ago, I confiscated phones, walkmans, nintendos etc, at the door and returned them to parents or escorts.....they had no place in schools then and no place today.
