Actually @wizbates her tweet says her MOTHER was abused, not her. I’m not the one making a cheap political point, she is, implying that Boris Johnson is to blame for 3 men abusing her mother. Asking WHEN that abuse took place is rather crucial to that claim, isn’t it?https://twitter.com/wizbates/status/1027889010201571328 …

I don't ask people that have been through a horrible, abusive experience a question I already know the answer to make a cheap political point out of their suffering and oppression. But I guess everyone has a different style

I don’t think it’s making a cheap point for people who live the reality of Islamophobia every day to expect elected public figures to talk about them, their religion and their clothing in a respectful way. She doesn't blame Boris Johnson she just makes the link.

“She just makes the link.” Lol. And should Emily Thornberry & Harriet Harman also be hashtagged in for their comments about women in burkhas/niqabs too? Are they also to blame for that incident?

Understanding the importance of public figures talking about people in a respectful way whilst expressing their views is not the same as blaming them. You’re conflating the two things again, which neither she nor I have done.

Boris Johnson’s article explicitly stated he was defending the right of Muslim women to wear the niqab/burkha. He was respectful to Muslim women. His supposedly offensive comments were descriptions of the garments. Why should anyone have to respect an item of clothing?

It is clearly mocking and disrespectful to say a whole group of women who dress in a certain way look like a letterboxes. These are already women who suffer abuse because of their religion and race. Language is important in politics. Let’s stop pretending that it isn’t.

The burkha and niqab are both ridiculous and horrific garments and deserve to be mocked. He didn’t say the women should be mocked. He specifically respected their right to choose. What are you finding this so complicated?

There are lots of clothing that is horrific and I’ve seen you in a lot of them@but I wouldn’t compare you to an animal let alone an inanimate object.
