If supposedly sensible Conservative MPs, activists and commentators seriously believe it is acceptable for their senior politicians to describe BAME women as "letter boxes" and "bank robbers" then it's over. It really is all over.

Right. So we should also ban crash-helmets. And balaclavas. And those masks you see in novelty shops. And scarves wrapped around the face. Presumably we should also start a debate on sunglasses.
-
Yes, we should ban face coverings in public that don’t serve a purpose, eg protection, health reasons, the cold etc. Your other points are just silly.
-
Excellent. And how do we, as a society, collectively agree on what non-essential clothing items should be banned. Referendum? Primary-legislation? Some sort of regulatory authority - OFBURKA? Personally, I’d like to see Ugg boots on the list.

People who wear smart jackets over t-shirts

You can, but I’ll ignore you. As, I suspect, will the Guardian.

Oh, and Boris specifically said he DOESN’T support a ban on the burkha. I disgree with him on that: I DO support a ban.

That's a fundamentally different position from Boris', of course. Do you accept that a key consequence of banning veiling wld be that a high % of those that currently veil simply wldn't go out in public at all? Do you see that as a necessary stepping-stone?
-
Yes. That is a genuine concern. But the actions of controlling abusive husbands/fathers who prevent women leaving the house because they can’t cover up shouldn’t be allowed to dictate public policy. We should deal with those men.
-
That won't always be the case though, will it. Some women, rightly or wrongly, believe men outside their families shldn't see their faces - their own belief. Many of those women will stay inside if veiling's banned. Is that a "you can't make an omlette..." thing?

I don't like the look of hells angels.hoodies, and people with tattoos on their faces can society add these to the discussion?
-
None of those things affect the ability of those people to communicate with others or for others to communicate with them
-
you are communicating with me now quite successfully and I can't see your lips move

Isn't that a bit like saying we should have place limits on *everyone's* right to an abortion, not just womens'?
-
No, the new laws in other EU nations on this ban all facial coverings worn by both men and women, quite rightly.
-
Who exactly are these men with covered faces we need to legislate for?
