Argument that veil (i) not conducive to integration but (ii) shouldn't be banned commonplace: hardly a brave piece of taboo-breaking. But, should a senior MP (would-be PM?) engage in personal jibes at women if he wanted to debate integration seriously?https://twitter.com/johnestevens/status/1026840898917859328 …

We should be free to criticise all aspects of religious ideology: commitment to free religious expression appears stronger in UK than Europe. Absolutely fine for people to say why they think full veil is barrier to integration & content. I do think his tone was badly misjudged.

Worryingly there are masses of tweets stating 1) it is racist to criticise clothing (it isn't) and 2) that criticising religion shouldn't be permitted. We are not in pre Renaissance times. Religion of any kind is a perfectly acceptable target for criticism and ridicule.
-
Free to ridicule anybody. By same token, free to criticise political leaders for the choices they make about how they do that. In my view, sober/serious critique of full veil is fine; those jibes seem to me badly misjudged in a world where women do get shouted at in the street.

Critiquing politicians is not only reasonable but laudable. I'm slightly surprised at the style of delivery but defend Boris's right to do so, as well as your right to critique. I do think the message (rejection of a ban) is more important than the style of delivery though.

We’re not facing up to the fact that a male patriarchal culture is making the decisions here. That does need to be attacked. It’s blindingly obvious Boris isn’t attacking the women.

Here is a good piece on the topic, from Rabiha Hannan of New Horizons in British Islam
@n_Horizons Shifting share of voice - across genders, across generations; empowering Muslim women matters. (I don't see that Boris Johnson's column tried to do that)http://www.britishfuture.org/articles/debate-the-veil-dont-ban-it/ …

It sounds like you're normalising vestiphobia. You'll be in massive trouble if Owen Jones hears about this

This reminds me of Boris Johnson's genuinely good clothing joke: that Jeremy Corbyn was about vested interests and "interesting vests"

The snowflakes and Liberals in our society have tried to shutdown any debate or comments involving Islam or Muslims. A very sad day in what was once the most tolerant country in the world.

If Boris had said that nuns look like penguins, this wouldn't even be a story. The left has some strange crush on Islam, and rush to defend even its most abhorrent practices.

How many people are hearing letterbox and bank robber but haven’t bothered reading the column? The words before letterbox are way more important and need debatingpic.twitter.com/jl9L9XHDEi

Exactly! But why tell the whole truth when you can turn it around to vilify Boris. Anything to turn away attention from PM debacle

You never hear Boris complaining about the insults and slurs he gets from a lot of people. Never a day goes by without a reference to his hair etc.

Those that defend the wearing of the burka are as bad as those that impose the wearing of it. It has no place in any civilised society.

But it's nothing to do with religious ideology. It's a cultural misogynistic property statement.

It's so funny that uk gives permission to hold rallies where the protestors call for a separate country khalistan to be carved out of India but a person cannot talk about clothing

Free to criticise of course. However the manner in which he did it was pretty disrespectful. I'm also free to criticise his godshiteness. I can also criticise his suitability for public office based on his comments.
