The liberal outrage at this sentiment is laughable. Boris is right. There is NOTHING liberal or feminist or empowering or *anything* good about women wearing the burkha or niqab. In any circumstance. In any country or any culture. Ever.https://twitter.com/jessbrammar/status/1026413210302341120 …

That’s not what he said though is it. There are feminist discussions to be had about the wearing of the Burkha/Niqab and women’s choice to do so. Boris is not engaging in that discussion, he is name calling and “othering” these women and doing so for entirely cynical reasons.

No there isn’t a sensible feminist argument for wearing the burkha. Boris did not name call, he accurately described the absurd appearance of these garments. He mocked the outfits not the women. He criticised Islam, not Muslims.

There’s a feminist argument against wearing Burkha. But that’s not the one Boris was making. He was mocking a religious practice and doing so by reference to these women’s appearances. Also evidence in other European countries suggests banning Burkha etc has greater oppressive1/

No, mocking a medieval practice (that has little to do with Islam) is not the same as mocking Muslim women. There are a number of arguments against the burkha, only one of which is the feminist one. Integration and respect for British/western values is also a key argument.

And by how much do you think @BorisJohnson advanced the cause of integration? People tend to dig in when they’re sneered at in this way.

Can't help wondering what the reaction would have been if Jeremy Corbyn had made the "letterbox" and "bank robbers" comments.

It is NOT "key part of their culture". Till few years ago wasn't "in fashion". Who chooses to live in Western culture must be prepared to accept that culture, and ours is a face-to-face culture. He did NOT call them names he gave an ACCURATE description of their appearance .

You have to concede he could/should have expressed his opinions in a more grown up fashion ‘“It is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes’ are the words of an imbecile. It’s not what you say it’s the way that you say it 🙈
