That’s not what he said though is it. There are feminist discussions to be had about the wearing of the Burkha/Niqab and women’s choice to do so. Boris is not engaging in that discussion, he is name calling and “othering” these women and doing so for entirely cynical reasons.

No there isn’t a sensible feminist argument for wearing the burkha. Boris did not name call, he accurately described the absurd appearance of these garments. He mocked the outfits not the women. He criticised Islam, not Muslims.

Trust me, I’m no fan of Boris Johnson
-
There’s a feminist argument against wearing Burkha. But that’s not the one Boris was making. He was mocking a religious practice and doing so by reference to these women’s appearances. Also evidence in other European countries suggests banning Burkha etc has greater oppressive1/
-
No, mocking a medieval practice (that has little to do with Islam) is not the same as mocking Muslim women. There are a number of arguments against the burkha, only one of which is the feminist one. Integration and respect for British/western values is also a key argument.
-
And by how much do you think
@BorisJohnson advanced the cause of integration? People tend to dig in when they’re sneered at in this way. -
Integration??? are you having a laugh?. Do you walk around with your eyes and ears covered?. You really do need to get out more and see what's going on.

Outdated garment of oppression in my view . Women dying in Iran and Afghanistan for daring to take it off . Saddens me . I hate the left hijacking this as a political lever . David lammy out for votes yet again ...no surprise there then .. what an absolute whopper he is .
-
I don't think he was trying to ridicule them, but as ever the easily offended and hysterical left have pounced, conflated the headlines and blurred the sentiment ..in actual fact he was saying a total ban is a step too far and that it would only serve to inflame the issue

Julia its just your campaign is all that way, and this just seems another populist example of Tory Brexiters trying to use race to gain support from EDL and the likes. Its becoming a pattern Luvvie..pic.twitter.com/MM0XkXSt3J

Nope, I’ve been opposed to the burkha for YEARS
-
You can be opposed to something without trying to make politcal capital by trying to Incite Right wing racists to your cause..
-
As indeed I was doing.

Do you Honestly believe that most Muslim women actually choose to wear this? I can tell you for a fact, after working with many of them in West Yorkshire for many years that most of them either do not have a choice and/or have been pressured into wearing them.
