      Julia Hartley-Brewer Retweeted Gradivus Graham

Roseanne’s tweet wasn’t “arguably racist”, it was just plain “racist”. But if those are the rules then they have to apply to EVERYONE, and that includes racists of every ethnicity. Sarah Jeonh is a racist and the New York Times should be ashamed of themselves for hiring her.https://twitter.com/GradivusGraham/status/1025055036190146560 …

Roseanne Barr was drummed out of her profession for making one arguably racist Tweet, but Sarah Jeong, who has a long history of making incredibly racist Tweets about "white people" and "white men," was just hired to the editorial board of the New York Times. @nytimes #MediaBias pic.twitter.com/zKjca7cQRc

I agree those tweets are bad. But it’s not a good look when white people jump at EVERY chance to say “look, other people are racist too!” It looks a bit defensive.

I agree that the hiring doesn’t look good though. And the “counter-trolling” defence is a tad weak.

You wouldn’t use the words “defensive” or “doesn’t look good” about a white person tweeting such things about black people, so why make those excuses for her? There are racists of every ethnicity.

Of course. But I’d argue the sheer weight of institutionalised prejudice towards non-whites outweighs the salient examples that we leap to whenever we get the chance. Why can’t we accept and let some cases go? It’s like we are desperate to spread the blame. Why?

The notion that you can only be racist because of “weighted institutionalised prejudice” meaning some suffer more racism than other is simply moronic. Racism is racism, as it uses stereotypes to justify a belief that all that group do/act according to said stereotype.

Exactly. Racism isn’t just evidence that someone is nasty, it’s also evidence that they’re stupid. On both grounds, why would anyone want to hire a racist?

I think you’ve both missed my point. Her comments are repellent. I’m just wondering WHY we are so eager to jump every time we get to point at a minority being prejudicial. It speaks to a sense of resentment.

Ok. Who are you speaking for? I wasn’t suggesting you are personally resentful - I’m speaking broadly.

Myself. Sorry Julia - you seem to be getting a bit antagonistic. I’ve just tried to explain my thoughts. There’s no attack here.

I’m not remotely antagonistic. Don’t go all snowflakey on me! I’m not offended by what she tweeted. She is clearly a nasty piece of work. She isn’t a victim of anything so she should be held to account like everyone else.

I think "snowflake" is beneath someone like you to be honest. It's TrumpTalk. But anyway, back to the point. I think we've got sidetracked. I agree with your initial post completely and don't think NYT should have employed her . . .

. . . but i was just questioning the glee with which other people (such as many of your commentators) relish the chance to point at someone else's racism as if it is a an excuse for or negation of their own. That's all i'm saying. No point saying it again now.
