He’s a civil servant - no one votes for civil servants, and in the UK we don’t elect our own civil servants. Do you actually have the faintest idea How the EU is structured?
-
The Commission (specifically the College of Commissioners) is the Executive of the EU, not the civil service.
-
But the point is that equivalent figures in the UK polity - eg Cabinet Sec, Perm Secs of Home Office/FCO aren’t elected either.
-
None of those initiate legislation. Not the same.
-
UK civil servants also propose and recommend legislation. https://www.parliament.uk/education/about-your-parliament/how-laws-are-made/ …
-
Sorry, this is still not remotely the same. At all. Civil servants do not propose legislation to Parliament. Ever. That is for the Executive or the Legislature itself.
-
That doesn’t make the Commission like a government.
-
It is the Executive, not the civil service. The wider European Commission is the civil service, the College of Commissioners is the Executive. I.e. the de facto government in an organisation that isn't a full state. This is still a fact.
