OK Twitter, next week I'm going back to my old school prizegiving @HuishEpiscopiAc. What should I tell them? What do you wish you'd been told aged 11-16? GO!

Not true in some industries. Law being one.

Last year I applied for a job at a very large international bank in London and they asked me for my O level certificates. I explained that as it was over 40 years ago I had lost them, and that I wasn’t sure that a grade C in woodwork was particularly relevant to the role.

I wish you’d got fucking job then. It was shit and I quit after 5 months.

I don’t think that’s true. I’m now 40 and am still obliged to include A Level results on my CV. I would take the opposite approach and emphasise they do matter without scaring the kids.

I used to think O levels were irrelevant almost as soon as you'd done them if you carried on in the sixth form (1976). But universities rejected me on the basis of those results..

And if you did really well you'll have to find excuses to tell people otherwise they won't know how clever you are. I, for example, have 6 A Levels, 3 of them were grade A, 2 were grade B, and we don't talk about my result in History.

Whats possibly worse are the topics you do for your degree that are never used again.

Rubbish . It’s a question on nearly every application form I’ve filled in and I’m way past 6 months post school.

I have been working for the last 48 years, and in all that time, all the jobs, I have never once been asked what qualifications I achieved at school or college, not once.

Depends on the industry. If you want to go into something like law or accountancy you have to provide full details of your GCSEs, A Levels just to be considered. But Julia’s not exactly known for factual accuracy.
