No, it was the Remoaner minority’s refusal to accept Brexit which has poisoned British political life. If everyone had accepted the result of the democratic vote, the country could have united around Brexit. https://twitter.com/helenlewis/status/1012297844840189958 …

It was wrong to have a Yes/No on something so permanent. In a GE the vote can be reversed after 5 years if that is the will of the people. But the remainers (not remoaners) won’t get a chance again until the damage is done.

So we shouldn’t have had that yes/no referendum in 1975 then?

Why did you, Julia, not unite around the 1975 vote? If you had, we wouldn’t have had #ToryLies on #Brexit and the #BrexitShambles

You mean 'accepted' but I agree with you. And Farage himself said if the vote was remain by a small margin he would have 'unfinished business'.

It took about 10 or so years to join the EEC back then because it went to Whitehall several times before the vote. Realistically it will take years to remove us from the EU sucessfully, so this is going to be bad for the UK because there was no plan beforehand.

#you are being simplistic to suit yourself with the yes/no argument in 1975 Julia. Then we were outside the ‘club’ attempting to join it. Since joining we have participated in many of its benefits & institutions ECJ, FOM, SM ,CU & Security. These can’t be dealt with on a yes/no !

Were you born in '75 Julia ? Are your memories from that time so indelibly etched in your mind, like an old pathè newsreel. Rose tinted specs and sunlit uplands are the future on fantasy island, no doubt.

Where you there in 1975? It wasn't a Yes/No referendum in 1975 I WAS there & voted for EU. There wasn't any Farage/Banks & Cambridge Analytica to contend with distorting picture. It was explained what EEC membership would mean. Didn't use dirty tricks Brexit used in its campaign.

That was a properly run referendum and had an overwhelmingly positive "yes" result. Leavers have been whingeing about it for 43 years and still have no plan and no idea. 🇪🇺☘

Yes, the people spoke in 1975, so why did we need a second vote. Isn't that the argument for not having a vote on the final deal? Let's not be choosy with the facts.

By extension of your flawed logic, you should have sucked it up and accepted the result of the 1975 referendum. It was the will of the people. Why then did you undemocratically whinge for 40 years for another one? 😂

In 1975 the result was 67% Yes to 33% No. That’s why it lasted. This time the majority is so slim, and shrinking, that even if it does go head, in not too many years any government in power will find itself forcing Brexit on an electorate that doesn’t want it. That will not be...

The 1975 vote was profoundly different in that by voting to join we knew where we were going, and that we'd stay the same if we didn't. This time a vote to leave says nothing whatsoever about where we're going.

Neither referendum was about high principle; both were sticking plasters for internal party divisions. Labour's 1st time, Conservative's 2nd. Referenda not necessarily stupid, holding one to "fix" the party is. Like having baby to fix marriage, doesn't work & innocent get hurt.
