A marriage certificate was a contract that a couple made to their community. That they would be responsible for each other and their children. It was also meant to be a statement that each of the couple was off-limits to others outside of the marriage.

When has any of that ever stopped anyone having affairs
-
Miss the point won't you? I was explaining what a marriage certificate is. People breaking that contract is another matter. The welfare state's social engineering has intruded to an unacceptable degree.

Such a pity that the next piece of paper is so often the Divorce Cert.
-
Exactly. I've worked with too many blokes in their late 50's early 60's who have got divorced and end up living with a sibling working all the hours they can when they should be winding down

I think a joint mortgage and kids is a bigger commitment. A wedding is often a nice expensive party for family, friends and people you've never ever seen in your life! Doesn't guarantee it'll keep a couple together

Many people aren’t religious and feel hypocritical for having a wedding based on religious traditions. Civil ceremonies gave them what they wanted and dealt with inheritance law that is tricky when it comes to people who are unmarried. Not sure why civil partnerships required
-
Possibly cost?
-
A civil wedding is pretty cheap. It can cost as little as £36 for the ceremony. I can’t imagine that a legal civil partnership agreement is much cheaper than that.
-
Perhaps it's the divorce that becomes costly compared with dissolving a civil partnership?

When my partner and I had our Civil Partnership (the only option at the time) I suspect we felt every bit as happy and committed as we would had we married.

Ok, I'm married, and if Jon thinks it's just a bit of paper, I think he's just a bit of a moron. I hope that's given offence, because he has insulted the sacredness of marriage, he has insulted my marriage, and the marriage of everyone who has ever entered into that sacred union

Although I agree it's stupid for a heterosexual couple to have a civil partnership. That's just odd. We have marriage specifically for that already

This is about ending Christianity on all fronts - LGBQTI undermined Christian values now this will undermine Marriage in a church by advocating that it is not necessary
