Far too many idiots are reacting to this tweet accusing me of thinking being gay or black is a “bad thing” or akin to working for Trump. I don’t & my tweet doesn’t imply that. I just don’t think anyone should refuse service to people just cos they don’t like them or their views.https://twitter.com/juliahb1/status/1011331432218800130 …

I’m not a Trump fan but if it’s okay for them to refuse to serve Sanders, then why wouldn’t it also be okay for another restaurant to refuse to serve a gay couple, a black woman or a Jewish or Muslim man? Where do you draw the line? Be careful what you wish for. https://twitter.com/stonecold2050/status/1011135054582407168 …

But you can distinguish between a belief and a characteristic? One is a conscious decision by a human being that indicates a series of complex decisions that can then be judged and acted upon by others in reaction? Whereas a characteristic is, mostly, not a decision?

Yes, but which one does religion come under. A characteristic or a choice? And who gets to decide?

But you didn’t just mention religion. You actually mentioned race and sexuality first. Why was this? If you understand that discrimination against characteristics is wrong why even mention race or sexuality?

Under the original point, supporting and working for Trump clearly an actionable decision. For me, religion also mainly a decision, though it’s culturally transmitted and so, I agree, grey. Which is why some countries treat its expression as a state protected ‘characteristic’.

It’s a difficult one - Even P.Thatchel changed his mind over the cake refusal story as it’s such a difficult one - good to debate but next to impossible to legislate for.however in the case of the restaurant, they were well within their rights as its based on an action

Depends on whether you refer to beliefs or actions. If someone actively supports a religious or religion-based political leadership that persecutes certain groups, I'd argue that would be reasonable for someone to refuse service. That's different to faith discrimination.
