One big difference from my childhood and now; pester power. We didn't have it. When did children start to get it and in such force?

No, when did parents stop saying No?
-
When mass poverty and safe playing areas stopped.

Rich people used to say 'No' too or their children's nannies certainly did. cf Mary Poppins!
-
My Mum said "no" a lot to me in supermarkets. I just accepted it because I was bought up properly...

It explains why so many younger people, today, fall apart when thing don't go their way. It's a novel experience to them.

We've taught them all about their rights but not their responsibilities. It shows.

Everything is always someone else's fault these days. No idea of self control or responsibility for ones own actions / behaviours

Why teach self control when you can just have an overbearing government bureaucracy tell you what you can and can't like. Will sure make voting easier in the future.

That would imply parental responsibility. Shame on you for suggesting such a thing.

People can't be expected to use their own initiative and common sense tho, that's why we need the nanny state (and Jamie Oliver) to wag their fingers and tell us right from wrong!

Indeed. But like all parenting 'problems' these days, it's always someone else's fault, someone else's responsibility - the State, or schools, or the corporations, never the parents. This mentallity creates a host of problems for society in general: anti-soc behavior, crime etc.
