I don’t want anyone covering their face in public without good reason - whether it’s with a burqa or a balaclava. No requirement in any religion for either to be worn. Good on the Danish, French etc and about time we followed suit in the UK.https://twitter.com/nickyaacampbell/status/1002529403639824384 …

A friend of mine just said ‘loathe the burqa, loathe the ban.’ Fair enough ? Voltaire nearly sad that. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44319921 …

Actually, it’s got everything to do with everyone living in a free and democratic society where women aren’t subjected to medieval practices.

So state banning of an item of clothing is an example of a free and democratic society? I agree that women (and men) should be able to wear what they want. That extends to the state not also preventing them from doing what they want.

Would you describe a motorcycle helmet as an item of clothing?

The cost to the state of having to treat you for head injuries a helmet would have prevented justifies the law intervening. There is no comparable justification for banning Burqas.

So banning a garment that women freely wear is democratic and enabling free expression?

How does banning what people choose to wear sit well in a 'free and democratic society'?

As long as women anywhere are jailed or beaten for refusing to wear the veil, it cannot be considered just a normal, innocent piece of clothing. Seyran Ates, the founder of the Ibn-Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin recently said on TV: 'The veil is a weapon of political Islam.'
