Just pointing out that this is completely incoherent. Manchin really thinks spending $200 billion per year would be “changing our whole society to an entitlement mentality” but spending $150 billion per year does not?https://twitter.com/RiegerReport/status/1443618513768357897 …

First part of Joe Manchin’s press gaggle: “My top line has been $1.5 [trillion] because I believe in my heart that what we can do and what the needs we have right now and what we can afford to do, without basically changing our whole society to an entitlement mentality." pic.twitter.com/IoeWp9vrem

Manchin and others are focusing on these top line numbers because they are abstractions. It’s a lot easier to say: I support 1.5 trillion but not 2 trillion than saying I don’t want families to have paid leave because private equity managers should keep their tax loophole

I wish someone would specifically ask him about affordable child care. Does he think providing childcare so people can work is an entitlement?

Focus on a handful of important and immediate priorities, like child care and adding dental coverage to Medicare, save the rest for later and let’s live to fight another day (and those other programs).

You could continue to add to the list and get back to $10 trillion. Where does it end?

Regardless, total spending still matters significantly.

This is exactly what every journalist in his orbit should be asking. Sadly for us, there are mostly reporters, not journalists, in his orbit.

The question is what will Dems do? Pass a $1.5 trillion package or zero. This is the one chance to pass something. They will be out of power in Congress in 2022. Take the 1/2 loaf and declare victory.

Can see it now: This green energy stuff hurts me & my donors. Cut it. These corporate taxes hurt me & my donors. It's out. Wealthy, subsidized donors & I don't support poor people. Gone. Old people vote. I'll run on that. Keep it. Waiting for check from daycare chain. Maybe.

How much in tax breaks, subsidies and grants did his daughter get for her epi-pen heist and how much does his various business interests and holdings get?
