Essentially Russia is acknowledging that its ally Assad shot its aircraft thinking it’s Israeli, but is blaming Israel who started the missile launches, and according to Russia, pushed their aircraft into line of fire.

i'm honestly a bit puzzled as to how... Syria's RU-made weapons certainly must have some kind of Friend/Foe ID (IFF)? A Russian AA platform would recognize a Russian plane. Did a system fail? Did Syria not set it up properly, or override it? Something else? weird to me...
