This story is outrageous & unacceptable. But what breaks my heart is this: “Butler had always known there was a possibility that he could be targeted by police because he is black & was taught by his father to comply with officers if that ever happened.”
Conversation
Too many families of color have to give their children this advice. Changing this & ending explicit & implicit bias in law enforcement & across the criminal justice is one of the key civil rights challenges we face.

Also, the Trump DOJ’s retreat from using consent decrees to address civil rights violations by law enforcement is a mistake the next Attorney General must correct.

I pray that Mr. Butler can continue and complete his school. This is outrageous and uncalled for. I hope the therapy and support he is receiving from family and friends continues to keep him lifted up.

‘Too many?’ All families of color have this conversation.
It is a rite of passage just like getting your driver’s license but more importantly, it is a matter of survival.
This is the reality that we face. This is why we kneel. This is still happening so we can’t ‘get over it.’

I had a black co-worker explain this to me: most people of color have this talk with their sons at some point in their young lives. “White privilege” became brilliantly clear to me from this. I never had to have this talk with my sons.

Not to dismiss the issue by any means, but it's worth noting that it's not inappropriate to advise children or adults to comply with directives from police. But I don't recall specific childhood lessons about police, only on general respect for law and leaders.
