This story is outrageous & unacceptable. But what breaks my heart is this: “Butler had always known there was a possibility that he could be targeted by police because he is black & was taught by his father to comply with officers if that ever happened.”

i'm white, my kids are white, i've told them to do what police tell you......its not only kids of color ........i've had police hold a gun to my head before stop acting like this don't happen to white people

In Miami, my white son was driving his Latino and black high school friends, pulled over for some dumb car thing, and all were harassed and threatened. These were drama kids in one of the best arts schools not criminals. So...

‘Too many?’ All families of color have this conversation. It is a rite of passage just like getting your driver’s license but more importantly, it is a matter of survival. This is the reality that we face. This is why we kneel. This is still happening so we can’t ‘get over it.’

I had a black co-worker explain this to me: most people of color have this talk with their sons at some point in their young lives. “White privilege” became brilliantly clear to me from this. I never had to have this talk with my sons.

Not to dismiss the issue by any means, but it's worth noting that it's not inappropriate to advise children or adults to comply with directives from police. But I don't recall specific childhood lessons about police, only on general respect for law and leaders.
