This story is outrageous & unacceptable. But what breaks my heart is this: “Butler had always known there was a possibility that he could be targeted by police because he is black & was taught by his father to comply with officers if that ever happened.”

Too many families of color have to give their children this advice. Changing this & ending explicit & implicit bias in law enforcement & across the criminal justice is one of the key civil rights challenges we face.

Also, the Trump DOJ’s retreat from using consent decrees to address civil rights violations by law enforcement is a mistake the next Attorney General must correct.

This happened to me...4 cops pointed their weapons at my head all for reaching for my ID that I jad been asked for.
I was unarmed.
I wasn't carrying.
I was active duty military at the time.
I wasn't in uniform.

This should obviously not have happened to you. But I appreciate your willingness to share your story because I think stories like yours help to put a personal face on this issue that helps people who don't face this reality understand it and how wrong it is better.

That, and “A coach traveling with the group got off the bus and told the officers that Butler was a member of the school's swim team.” (Would he have survived on his own?)

Heartbreaking. I was surprised that the superhero drama episode 3 went there about “the talk” then realized unfortunately that is the reality for too many citizens and that needs to change. netflix.com/title/80117803

This is disgraceful. Every one of these officers should be fired and kept from law enforcement permanently. And the officer who put a gun to his head should be prosecuted. To anyone who scoffs at Black Lives Matter— read this!
