There was a time in our history not that long ago where he would not have served a day for what he did. The folks who murdered Emit Till never served a day. This may not seem like complete justice and for the family it never will be, but this is progress.

Exactly. It's a 10 year upwards departure, significantly more than what the guidelines called for, based on cruelty and abuse of trust.

Yeah, people sometimes see "40 year max sentence" and get misled a little, regarding anything short of that as a failure. 22.5 is still a solid sentence -- hard to knock down on appeal, and a full decade longer than the guideline.
