...without thinking about how what they are saying affects people’s lives. Eventually, this global health hype saying becomes doing, and is one of the reasons is needed

These discussions also aren’t isolated to blatant ethical violations detailed below. There is also what I call global health hype. Its a type of discourse which is very disconnected from GH ground realities and makes students feel valued for doing ‘global health’

Much more work needed, with considered protocols to allow the refugee & migrant voices to be heard in their own languages. Not just in translation, where silences can be created & meanings made more benign. In era of Islamophobia, we have to fight for their equity.

Disappointing, indeed. at a Expert Group Meeting of the Cultural Determinants of Health last year a draft document was discussed about what should be done. A gap in that was an examination of the impact of such cultural politics on health provision & access.

Gideon comes up with an all time great come back in to the usual bhakt accusation that any critical observation about the Government is "left wing" etc. "Left wing only if your starting point is Mein Kampf." 😂

This is the case-study that worried us . So, important to put in ethical & regulatory structures at all ends to disallow such practice.

So important. Something we have discussed . Important to train those who want to join such 'missions' from the UK....

Interestingly, many of these papers have been written by HIC experts. If anyone has seen guidance from LIC colleagues on short-term global health missions, please share! Thanks.

The high rates of mental ill-health (1 in 6 every week) would be considered unacceptable in any other area of health (esp. noncommunicable illness). Addressing those requires the most concentrated effort in a generation. Action across funding, innovation, policy.

No ethics - just an unchecked set of imperial attitudes, which we, as teachers, have to weed out & replace with attitudes of respect for places where we want to study & work. should also be providing ethical standards for this sort of thing, but the relevant Dept. is weak.

Have personally seen a PI & post-docs collect water samples from a LMIC government facility w/o necessary clearances. They were then reported to local intelligence, who our hosts convinced to back off. Reported to the University, but no visible action against funding 'superstar'.

Such an important thread. I see it in the UK as well. But, students cannot only be blamed. Several of their teachers, often clinicians lionized by global charitable foundations & funded by UK bodies, do not bring this sort of behaviour under check.

As far as I can see, there are plenty of criticism on Chinese social media, even under State media account, like People’s Daily, can find messages by patients in Wuhan asking for help...I think those voices have been heard based on new policy in Wuhan & WHO’s recent discussion

One of the best things about the fiasco in Iowa is how clearly it shows that fetishising technology for the sake of "innovation" is "disruptive" but not in the vacuous way managerial language talks about disruption. It is disruptive because it is unworkable and useless.
