Thousands of children were taken from their comfortable lives in the West to live in the first modern-day caliphate. Trinidadian Sulay Su, 16, spent five years living with . His experience was not what you'd expect (no paywall!) 1/

This is the heartstopping moment rescuers run back into the ruins of a hospital amid a desperate struggle to save babies in a maternity hospital in north-west Syria as it's repeatedly bombed. Watch the full story in the tweet below:

  3. Glad the OPCW, after many months of ignoring erroneous reporting on the detractors' leaks, has finally gone on record about this. They were not "whistleblowers" but former employees with "incomplete information" regarding the investigation into the Douma chemical attack

BREAKING: release a damning and unprecedented condemnation of the lies peddled by WikiLeaks, Peter Hitchens and the Mail on Sunday, with the Director General saying the leakers "are not whistle-blowers" whose views are "not backed by evidence".

Breaking - investigation finds ‘egregious’ breaches by two former employees who leaked details of probe into chlorine attack in Syria’s Douma, says they were not whistleblowers -

  6. Is this a sort of tacit approval from FCO? A spox tells us: “Anyone who has fought for or supported Daesh should – where possible – face justice for their crimes in the most appropriate jurisdiction, which will often be in the region where their offences have been committed" 8/

  8. Relative of one British prisoner, pharmacist Anwar Miah from Birmingham, speaking to about the decision said: “My worry is whether they get a fair trial. These prisoners are British citizens and the UK needs to step up and give a fair trial to these people" 7/

Excellent thread on trials in situ for foreign fighter suspects in Rojava!

  10. There are 10 British male ISIS suspects that I know of currently in prison in Rojava (many have been stripped of citizenship) that could face trial. Two Beatles were taken out last year. Seems like they could be allowed lawyers from their own countries to represent them 6/

  11. Kurdish judge I interviewed said sentencing in Rojava courts was based on assessment of level of involvement with ISIS: 1. Emirs, leaders, frontline fighters - 15yrs-to-life 2. Worked in sharia or military administration- 1-2yrs 3. "Forced to work" in menial role - 0-1yr 5/

  12. Foreign govts have had more than two years to help organise an alternative, but they have failed. The idea for an international court was stillborn. It remains unclear how legally binding decision of a Kurdish self-administration court run by non-state actors in Syria will be 4/

  13. Ooof, missed off a zero in that first tweet- that should be 6,000 suspects already tried, not 600 (thanks ! And roughly another 6,000 more waiting for trial 3/

  14. I've been to these courts in Rojava and interviewed the judges. Most have legal qualifications from Aleppo and Damascus university from before the war. They are against the death penalty. From what I heard, the judges can try up to five suspects a day each 2/

  15. Just learned that the self-administration in Rojava is going to start trials for foreign ISIS suspects starting next month. has already informed Finnish authorities, which did not seem to object. They have tried around 600 Syrian suspects in local courts already

This 👇🏻. Western diplomats had been briefing that they believed Syrian army would stop after taking strategic parts of M5 highway but before Idlib city & that Russia would rein them in. Neither of these is happening & Turkey and Europe are going to need to recalibrate, & quickly

You can think that bombing the shit out of civilians is bad and that designated armed groups are bad too. It’s not complicated. If you can’t see that more than two million civilians are not the same as a few thousand HTS members, I’m not wasting my time responding to you.
