Super rich author Chuck Wendig is crying that poor people might be able read his third rate books for free online. What a loser. He should be grateful to be published. https://twitter.com/ChuckWendig/status/1244011591395356672 …

Chuck is worth over a million dollars. He’s not working class. He’s crying because some people are reading his books for free. That’s not the same as the exploitation of the wage labour system. Chuck is still going to be fine.

I mean it’s not hard to imagine given he has major publishing deals. Or are you seriously saying he’s not well off

Your assumption that “major publishing deals” = “fabulous wealth” betrays how thoroughly out of your depth you are on this subject.

You don't know the first fucking thing about the publishing industry and really, really need to stop talking now.

Thank you for proving you know even less about the publishing industry in the US than I do. It’s almost comforting in a way. Now, best shut up, dear, and do a little research about publishing, advances, royalties, etc. I think it might be eye-opening for you.

He’s financially secure due to his writing, yes, and thus better off than 95% of authors out there and not a logical example to bring up to go ‘oh authors aren’t really affected.’ this will become evident if you look into the actual facts and figures of most authors’ earnings

and the thing is...even though he specifically is doing well, you’d be surprised at the gap between ‘authors who get major company contracts’ and ‘authors living comfortably off that income.’ Think about what it means to get a 20-30k contract for a book you spent 2yrs working on.

Having a “major publishing deal” in this era, especially for fiction, does not automatically mean “a million dollars.” Are you a ten-year-old child, making these assumptions?
