Everything is better with a buddy, even if your buddy is a different species. Coyotes and badgers know this and sometimes hunt together. Photo by Kimberly Fraser/USFWS

  3. It's wild that something so small and fluffy can be so deadly! Happy !

  4. Early bird catches the... spider? The Loggerhead Shrike perches on Joshua Trees to scan for its prey of lizards, small rodents, birds, and insects. Once it has stalked and picked up its prey the Loggerhead Shrike then drops its food onto cactus spikes, saving its feast for later.

  5. “You have to be odd to be #1” –Dr. Seuss. Well Joshua trees sure are strange! But that makes them our #1!

  6. We love art. But when it defaces our cultural sites, historic sites, and natural resources, it is no longer art. It is vandalism. Do your part to by reporting illegal graffiti to jotr_graffiti@nps.gov and by only painting on paper - not on the park!

  7. Graffiti is illegal in the park - but please do not attempt to remove it on your own! If done improperly, it can cause further damage. Removal may only be attempted with supervision of park experts. Volunteer to help by contacting jotr_volunteers@nps.gov.

  8. Every boulder is born beautiful just the way they are - so they don't need graffiti to cover them up! Graffiti is illegal in Joshua Tree National Park. Help by refraining from drawing on, chipping at, or otherwise harming our rocks.

  9. They might currently be in brumation, but we still want to celebrate our rattling residents and silent slitherers on ! Snakes are an important piece of the Joshua Tree ecosystem, and we're happy to have them around - at a safe distance! Photo: NPS / Kurt Moses

  10. Red light, green light, one, two, three: everybody freeze for today's traffic! Good news from here in Joshua Tree, almost all of our roads are open and passable. Two exceptions: Black Eagle Mine Road is still closed long-term, as is Upper Covington Trailhead Spur.

  11. To learn more about the exciting feats of the Kangaroo Rats, Joshua Tree invites you to a special program by visiting scientists, Professor Rulon Clark and Grace Freymiller, at the Indian Cove Amphitheater on February 7, 2020, at 7:30 pm. Photos: Grace Freymiller

  12. What’s even more fascinating is that the cuddly-looking creatures can use their tail to rotate themselves midair up and away from the striking sting of a rattlesnake’s fangs. The rats can then propel themselves out of harm’s way by kicking the snake and hopping away to safety.

  13. The desert is a land filled with a plethora of predators. Small animals like the kangaroo rat have adapted over time to evade their predators in incredible ways. Using their hind legs the kangaroo rat exhibits unimaginable flying leaps and midair kicks to evade certain death.

  14. Come on down to Joshua Tree National Park: we've got big boulders the size of small boulders and small boulders the size of... smaller boulders! Many are roadside accessible (but thankfully not blocking the road). What boulders large and small have you seen at Joshua Tree?

  15. Water makes the wildflowers grow… but so does snow! Did you know that snow can be even more helpful for the growing process of desert plants, because it absorbs slowly into the ground rather than quickly washing away soil like during rain or flash floods?

  16. The desert is the last place you'd expect to see water - but we've gotten plenty in the last few months here at Joshua Tree National Park! Were you lucky enough to spot any? If so, where?
