Set aside the fact that GOP legislators at the federal and state levels recently tried to overturn a free and fair election, or that GA has a very recent history of purging low-turnout minority voters and manufacturing long lines in minority neighborhoods.

The state literally was not a democracy in any way, shape or form until just 56 years ago—and then, only because of federal coercion. Skeptics and opponents of the law aren’t crazy, and they aren’t engaging in needless hyperbole. They’re considering the bill in broader context.

If the restrictive/authoritarian provisions in the voting bill can nullify the acceptable provisions, the overall effect of the bill is what counts - not the ultimately meaningless "compromises".

But that gets litigated (if "cases and controversies" arise) in light of case law giving weight to the exercise of the franchise by those who have been historically discriminated against.
