Note re: turnout The caucus process is intimidating and super time-consuming. Met lots of Iowa Ds who weren’t caucusing because 1) they’re too busy, 2) they don’t know how, 3) they’ll vote for anyone vs. Trump Dangerous to draw conclusions from Iowa, about this or anything else

I wonder how many times this happen in the over 1,700 caucus sites around Iowa. This video is worth watching on how things got screwed up not only with the reporting to the Iowa Democratic party but mess ups on the ground in precincts.

Mallory Pope, Biden precinct captain tells her story of what happened here — adds off camera that her people filled out a second choice, but by the time for the second realignment, the cards got mixed up. Understably upset here:

  5. Caucuses are designed in a way that limits participation. There’s a cap on how many people are not elderly/infirm, parents without childcare, night shift workers, etc. Best way to boost turnout and participation: switch to a primary.

  7. Regardless of who your candidate is, I hope there will be agreement going forward: *No more caucuses; just primaries *Iowa doesn’t go first just because *Delegate count and voting order should be partly contingent upon how accessible and inclusive the process is

Every. Single. Fucking. Election. 1. Hand counted 2. Paper ballots 3. Records preserved 4. Absolutely nothing posted until a second count is complete. Do I have to do ALL of this for you?

  9. I’m ready to declare it: the Iowa caucuses have lost the Iowa caucus.

I know caucuses appeal to a nostalgic sense of town-meeting style grassroots democracy, but it's a problematic format that works against working and disabled folks. And Iowa shouldn't be first in the nation. But now it's on to New Hampshire.

There are plenty of arguments against the Iowa Caucus, but one I don’t hear enough: hundreds of the best organizers in the party just spent a year knocking every door and accumulating mountains of data and most are leaving tomorrow. What if that all happened in Wisconsin?

This is like the electoral college meets stupid state laws/rules.

You know how, in pro sports, a series doesn’t start until the home team loses? Well, a Democratic primary doesn’t start until blacks and Hispanics vote. Save those sweeping conclusions for NV, SC and Super Tuesday.

It’s exciting we live in a country where the presumptive challenger to a fascist autocrat is essentially being decided by a game of Red Rover in an Iowa gym.

Four percent of Iowa voters are African-American ... African-Americans are more than a quarter of the total Democratic electorate. It’s hard to take any of this seriously as an induction of the mood of the Democratic Party

If you want to understand how preposterous it is that the Iowa caucuses determine who the next president is, tune in to CNN or MSNBC right now and get a load of this clusterfork

Iowa is charming and everything but let’s all admit that if we saw this sloppy, chaotic, slap-dash voting system employed in another country we’d call for UN election monitoring.

Reality check for those calling IA a “Biden implosion:” this caucus is totally unrepresentative of larger Dem primary electorate. Why? 1. It’s a caucus (unlike 90% of contests), rewarding passion on left 2. 90%+ white 3. Really young (21% under 35) All of Biden’s worst things.
