    I really could not have conjured up a funnier outcome than Bret googling “Jews as bedbugs” and building his next column around the first Google Books result he could find but that’s exactly what happened

    If you’re going to use a google books link, it’s generally a good idea to remember to clear the search. (And maybe be a little wary if your only hit is an repurposed dissertation no one has bothered to review and that only equivocally supports your hypothesis.)

    The NYT could find a dozen conservative writers who are more interesting and less whiny and ridiculous than Stephens but most of them aren't housebroken and the management would never know what kind of racist or misogynistic shit they might come out with.
