I don't believe in the death penalty, but even if someone does, that does not make warehousing in a time of #COVID19 okay Also, if you notice, I suggested an out for opposition to the death penalty in what I said

Agreed. I personally would take it a step father, but yes, even for those who don’t go “all the way” AGAINST the death penalty, should still take issue with putting incarcerated folks in harms way, with respect to Covid.

should but they often don't....not sure what you mean by a step farther...you were responding to a thread arguing for release for people with violent charges (in certain circumstances)....which seemed a lot farther than most go

Well, yes, I got what you are saying, and I guess what I mean by taking it a step further, I’m in the #FreeThemAll camp.

while I agree in principle, there is a real risk you lose people who are persuadable on decarceration in this moment - a moment where it is actually possible to decarcerate - by asking for everything...maybe you widen the Overton window, maybe you reinforce it?

Yes. That is a REALLY good debate to have. Do we go the “iterative change” route, OR ask for the “whole ball of wax?” I think we’ve been having the same debate with healthcare. I think in the previous “normal” times, I could see the logic behind the iterative argument, but...

It is only b/c it is abnormal times that people have moved at all, but it is a fragile peace and gained after incredible amounts of organizations and people working really hard....it could evaporate in seconds

Yes. This is true, but I kind of think that with respect to both healthcare, and decarceration (among other issues), we NOW have an opportunity to ask for a much bigger, sweeping changes. The the old status quo has been fully exposed and discredited (like never before)....

Yeah, which begs the question of it being politically possible. Due respect, Governor's DOC's, DA's, and Mayors just are not going to let every person out of jails or prisons anywhere in this country....But they will let people out, maybe even a lot of people.

A shining example, who has recently set a substantial amount of BIG changes in motion (almost single-handedly): @chesaboudin. Others? I know it requires going up against the whole system, but with the right amount of will, just ONE D.A. can do so much....

Chesa is not releasing all people in jail and he doesn't have the jurisdiction to release anyone in prison. I totally agree with you that he is amazing and doing a great job

Oh I know, but he’s doing it in dramatic numbers. Yes. He’s doing an amazing job. I wonder if you could try to get him on your pod?

Oh, it has already been planned, it is just very hard to get actual elected officials to talk right now...pretty overwhelmed by events...virtually certain it will happen this season
