    It’s the work of a PM to: 1/ Hold space for radically differing opinions across a team, and 2/ Use these conflicting opinions as datapoints to make high-quality, user-first product decisions. PMs talk endlessly about (2) and not enough about how to do (1) well.

    I see PM core responsibilities as: 1) Represent the user 2) Champion business case 3) Make sure everyone around project is heard, bought in and happy 4) Help project converge on deadline Others can do this work, too! Ultimately, PM fills whatever team gaps exist to achieve (4)

    Confidence comes from being open with one’s insecurities. It’s painfully paradoxical! Honest confrontation with my fears & anxieties has allowed me to build trust in myself and trust in my relationships with others. It’s from this place of trust that I’ve found confidence.

    Confidence comes from having nothing important to lose. Repeated success doesn't necessarily lead to confidence because our subconscious knows that it might have just been luck. So, choose carefully what's really important, and protect it aggressively. Then, confidence comes.

    I absolutely love novels. There’s something powerful & liberating about a book labeled “Fiction.” Novels give authors the freedom to write emotionally truthful & honest stories that aren’t held back by checkable facts. Non-fiction is filtered. Fiction tells the real stories.

    I had 4 different managers in 2019. I learned a ton from their varying strengths. Growing companies evolve by definition. Take the job expecting your manager to leave or transition to a new role. When that moment comes, maybe you’ll get to help hire your next manager!

    One thing that scares me about getting a full-time job is that a lot of hiring managers end up leaving shortly after presenting the opportunity. Who’s gonna be my manager? 😬

    I used to be a PM at a startup building hiring software. I led 500+ user research calls w/ recruiters. Building a great team is hard work. It’s also the most important work for startups. Recruiters are heroes who often go under-appreciated. Thank you for all you do, recruiters!

    There have been 999 companies trying to fix recruiting and it’s still a complete mess

    We spend the majority of our time in execution mode. This time of year is special: taking a break from execution creates the space to *design* the days and weeks to come. Intentional execution is the product of intentional design. Design proceeds doing.

    Quantitative metrics that come from qualitative user research. “75% of users prefer the new design.” You interviewed 4 users, 3 of whom like the new design. That’s 3 of 4 users interviewed, not 75% of users. Don’t quant your qual.

    The present is wide open, possibility-filled. Yet far too often, I’ve found myself living the present through the narrow dramas of the past. Maybe the greatest challenge of maturing is acknowledging and accepting the past, instead of allowing the past to manipulate the present.

    People aren’t dreadful because they make mistakes. All humans make mistakes. People are dreadful when they refuse to acknowledge & own their mistakes. A primary school teacher once said to me, “You own your words & your actions.” That one-liner has always stuck with me.
