In case you’ve missed it, here’s a beautiful example of a closed mechanochemical feedback loop by Tsuyoshi Hirashima’s lab. Collective migration, waves, FRET sensors, ... and some mechanical tools from our lab!

I would like to tell a little story here, if I may, because R21s get a bad rap. And I get it, they’re way less $$ than an R01 and take almost as long to put together. However, I have now been awarded 2 in the last 8 months and they’ve brought my lab back from the brink. In 2017

I struggled with this exact thing a lot during grad school. No matter how much you love science - try to decouple your self worth from your projects. You'll be much happier. A person before a PhD: understanding and combatting an academic identity crisis

Listen. I know the jokes write themselves here but there’s a very important fact buried in this: macaques carry ***Herpes B***. That’s not the same herpes humans carry. Herpes B is FATAL to humans. That’s no joke.

“As long as we use the prestige of the institution where a person works, number of papers they produce, and where they are published, as surrogate measure for the importance or value of a scientist as a peer in the research community, we’re doing it wrong.”

Just checked. We compared LED lumencor SOLA-SM-II with Metal-halide using the same zebrafish sample. A lot brighter with the Metal-halide

“What’s the mechanism?” can be a really ridiculous question. When a truly novel observation is made, almost by definition, the mechanism is unknown (and what qualifies as a “mechanism”?). Asking scientists to wait YEARS before sharing an exciting observation is irresponsible.

Them: You bought sunscreen on a Pcard, explain yourself. Me: I do field work at the equator & I spend all day in the sun. Them: Everyone needs to wear sunscreen. Personal expense. Reimburse your account $13. Me: 😳 But it’s a work safety issue!!! Them: We take checks. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The fact that there was free childcare at is really amazing; the message it sends to scientists with kids is "you belong here". I honestly get choked up just thinking about it, and wish it were more normal

Elsevier told Florida State they would spend more than $1,000,000 on tokens / pay-per-view. So far after the cancellation, they’ve spent $20,000. Deans are saying the library made the right decision in cancelling. Gale Etschmaier at

JFC if someone with first author Cell and Science pubs is being asked why they didn't also have a K award in job interviews, what hope do any of us have? To fairly evaluate scientists’ CVs, universities should welcome personal disclosures /1
