I've heard from lots of folks who want to enroll in my new React course, but can't afford it. I want to be able to share some high-quality free alternatives. I can think of a couple things (beta React docs, Odin Project), but I'm sure there are many wonderful options out there!

What are some of your favourite free resources for learning React?

Also, yes, I am aware that I bounce while I talk. Lots of people have told me. 😅 That's just what happens when I'm enthusiastic. And I think “enthusiastic and bouncy” is better than “monotone and still”.

Woah, totally forgot I did this 😅 I profiled a bunch of different layout algorithms in CSS, on a high-end machine and a low-end smartphone. The takeaway: there are some small differences, but they're all really friggin’ quick! ⚡️

Today I looked into the performance of different layout modes in CSS. I was curious if it takes the browser longer to lay out elements in a grid vs. Flexbox vs. flow layout. TL:DR; they're all plenty fast

A few people have asked whether The Joy of React uses hooks or class components. Decided to add this to the FAQ! joyofreact.com

Question:
Does this course use React classes? Hooks? Or both?

Answer:
In this course, we focus exclusively on hooks. Aside from one lesson where we see how React has evolved over the years, we don't work with class components at all.

In my course, we use React 18, and while class components aren't deprecated, they're certainly more of an outdated approach. I want to make sure we're focusing on the latest stuff, so that your newfound skills stay fresh as long as possible!
