is a game of sustained incremental advances. It's not helpful to our field when every small technical improvement is sold as a " leap" or as "one step closer" to QC. Time to rein in the press releases.

Academic research is among the worst offenders because the marketing interns have gotten their hands on scientific results with a mandate to drive "engagement" (i.e. clickbait)

Here's a paper which studies polarization online using data. "We propose a model that introduces the dynamics of radicalization as a reinforcing mechanism driving the evolution to extreme opinions from moderate initial conditions."

recently learned about Maarten Van den Nest's '09 paper "Simulating quantum computers with probabilistic methods" from Matt Coudron (and I think someone else, I forget who): there are strong parallels with my "quantum-inspired" techniques. (1/5)

Academics with permanent jobs always assure me that my rolling short-term contracts are “basically the same thing” so why aspire to more? Then you apply for a grant whose end date is beyond your current contract and the difference is pretty damned obvious. Casualization sucks.

Around 10:38, regarding claims of people using quantum computers for traffic optimization, Aaronson says, "These are applications where we don't even know once you have a full, scalable quantum computer what kind of advantage you get. 1/2

19:55, Aaronson: "You want to beware of snake-oil salesmen. People say, 'Quantum computers can accelerate your business right now.' You always want to stop and ask, '[...] Are you actually doing this better than a classical computer could've done the same thing?'" (1/2)

Look, I wish quantum computers could cure the common cold, revolutionize finance, and help me lose those extra 15 pounds. Nobody has shown they can't, but there's no reason to think they could.
