It is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and disturbance of right order to assign to a greater and higher association what lesser and subordinate organizations can do. Pius XI, 1931 Throw out the radio and take down the fiddle from the wall. Andrew Nelson Lytle, 1930

This is a thoughtful contribution. Still, I think a central authority accrediting bloggers or flagging posts treats symptoms not causes. What people really need is local help practicing the work of responsible theological interpretation & judgement.

The conversation about navigating Catholic social media progresses. “a light-touch Catholic ‘fake news’ response bureau would probably be better than a mandatum for bloggers” Yes, and this kind of thing could emerge organically, without canon law and even without the bishops

  7. Four years ago my university was in the news, and it wasn't pretty. I am grateful for the cool heads and courageous hearts of colleagues, friends, and prayer warriors across the world. Peculiar pressure proved once again the vitality of truth-loving community. Deo gratias.

This makes me sad, but Orestes Brownson is still honored at Notre Dame—he’s buried beneath the basilica. Fordham honors him with a statue. He was a great friend of and I’ve long thought we too should have a physical memorial.

Diane was deeply affected by her husband John's death. John Rehm died from Parkinsons disease. So did John Paul II. Talk of dignity and compassion must distinguish between what JPII showed us, and the very different things that DR, no doubt from real pain, is advocating.

The whole Diane Rehm transcript is available here. It could be used in a study of evasive & deceptive moral rhetoric. You don't even have to believe that euthanasia & suicide are intrinsically wrong to see the effort at hiding the very question.

True compassion doesn't hide the truth especially truths of conscience like the distinction between *allowing* and *causing* death. We should help people to die well. We should not participate in killing them.

I listened to most of this today. There is real desire for compassion, I believe, but also so much equivocation and systematic rhetorical dishonesty. "right to die" (right to kill) "assistance in dying" (assisting the person? no, assisting the end of life) "medicine" (poison)

Thanks to TI-MIT (the only palindromic Thomistic Institute chapter?) for hosting a great evening. Good questions from an engaged audience. It was a privilege to be discuss the challenges and promises of friendship with young truth-seekers. Will post a link when audio is online.

There is no doubt bishops could do what this article describes. But if they had the will & political acumen (& if we had a culture receptive to such) they could already have been more actively shepherding media producers & consumers w/o setting up a new formal system.

I don’t see how this doesn’t fall into the same problems as mandatum for theology professors: Some bishops issued indiscriminately Some faculty wanted it but didn’t want their colleagues to know they had it

I had a lot of fun writing this talk. It traces a common thread from Plato and Aristotle through John Paul II and Benedict XVI. And if that sounds too historical/theoretical it also tries to diagnose some practical challenges, and offer advice, for cultivating friendships.
