Good piece. As ever @guardian at its best when it uses writers like John Harris, Aditya Chakraborty etc whose focus is outside Westminster. Doesn’t make Westminster irrelevant, but that’s not where answers to current state of Britain are....

Close, but doesn't quite get to the core issues. Hartlepool isn't just Brexit-related; Brexit has happened. The current issues are the Culture War and Wokeness. The flag is one symbol of the deeper problems of Labour's rejection of patriotism, Britishness and British culture.
