According to Dr. Varner's website, he is a health policy expert. I mention this because I feel that the content of his blog expresses thoughts that would not be consistent with someone who is trained in health policy. Hoping that he can elaborate on his training @Doctor_Varner

"As a practicing physician, you might be surprised to hear that I side with the NRA." Response - No, As an American living in this country, I am beyond surprised you have the audacity to write those words about
@NRA where the leadership does not represent the membership.Show this thread -
"There’s something fundamentally different between diagnosing & treating a disease in a patient and recommending a new law because you treat people injured by guns." Response - Not consistent with health policy expert. Curious when you last took care of patient dying from GSW?

"doctors have been disguising partisan political proposals as medical recommendations." Response - This clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of the problem because the majority of Americans agree on solutions proposed & there is nothing Partisan about them.

"When doctors put on their white coats in political discourse and recommend authoritarian policies, they’re acting outside the scope of their expertise — and trying to force their opinions on millions of unwilling subjects." Response - Health policy expert? Continued....

Response - The medical community has an obligation to treat this as a public health crisis, your statement shows a lack of understanding how complex this issue is and the need to engage stakeholders with different skill sets.

"As doctors, we should never force our therapy on our patients. Not only is this immoral, but the results can be deadly." Response - Forcing therapy??? What's deadly is a GSW to the chest or abdomen. And preventing these injuries is anything BUT Immoral as a doctor.

"U.S. is currently facing an opioid epidemic that claimed the lives of an estimated 72,000 people last year. This is roughly the same amount estimated to have been killed by guns in that same time period." Response - First, we are addressing the opioid epidemic. Cont....

Response - As a health policy expert you should probably know that. Second please stop spreading factually incorrect data..72,000 is NOT all opiod deaths, that number is All drug overdoes. Over 110,000 firearm injuries and deaths annually. More attention to detail is needed.

Response - Approaching these problems are NOT mutually exclusive, in fact everyday through both QI and PI processes we work on improving our own “industry”, which I like to refer to as delivering high quality care. Includes Injury Prevention!

"....the truth is that laws are enforced by governments with the use or threat of violence. This isn’t hyperbole; if people fail to comply, they will be arrested and locked in a cage." Response - The fearmongering is unbelievable, you should be ashamed to spread this rhetoric.

"Medicine and public policy have no legitimate relationship to each other. Medicine concerns itself with diagnosing and healing individuals." Response - Ok first of all health policy is public policy. Again as a health policy expert it seems you should know that.

"Public policy concerns itself with the use of state violence against peaceful people." Response - Public policy is the principled guide to action taken by the admin. executive branches of the state with regard to a class of issues, in a manner consistent with law and customs.

"As healers, we should always reject the use of violence. Even if we think a law might make the world a safer place, it remains immoral for doctors to advocate new laws that will be enforced with violence" Response - Your thoughts are frankly frightening. Cont....

Response - Demonstrate a lack of understanding how complex a problem we face as Americans in tackling this issue. I recommend spending more time understanding the issues & being part of the solution instead of composing this blog which appears primarily to be for "self-gain".

The last thing I wanted to do at midnight was spend hours responding to this, but we, the medical community, cannot let this go unchecked. Also,
@kevinmd does great work, but I'm disappointed at the inaccurate facts that were allowed to be included in this piece.#ThisIsOurLaneShow this thread
