My 11th graders are in “news groups” right now. Instead of discussing a book, they’re each tracking 5 common topics across a variety of news publications, then meeting weekly to discuss how their coverage differed in terms of bias/rhetorical devices/logical fallacies, etc.

  3. Chatting with a cop at a local coffee shop. He and his family stepped up to parent/love a homeless teenager - food, shelter, education, community. When costs became a challenge another neighbor stepped in and wrote a check. It's an honor to be human.

I find that Attachment forms habitually for me, it creeps in pervasively, like water filling a hole by the sea, whenever I forget that the nature of reality is impermanence. Letting go is getting easier as I remember and bring my attention back to this truth.

Education funding is also a national defense issue. "We estimate that between 1996 and 2012, a 10 percent reduction in state appropriations led to an increase in foreign enrollment of 16 percent at public research universities."

I'd like to replace the Like buttons with multi-clicks: Credible, Relevant, Significant, and Novel. I'm not creative enough to know how to make this user-friendly, but I am convinced it would dramatically improve our social apps and news.

Cultivate equanimity - mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper Using mindful breathing, mindful sitting, or mindful walking for a few minutes we regain calm. Equanimity improves decisions and our overall quality of life. Good for our students, family, co-workers.

Fascinating, 3-part framework for "How People Decide What They Want to Know" from & Tali Sharot: Hedonic, Instrumental, and Cognitive Utilities of Information. Well worth the time to read and consider (short too):

Grateful for publishing negative results. It's our best protection against mal-investment of time, treasure, and talent. Inquiry approach - no improvement in achievement (no surprise) but it also did not improve self-efficacy or interest in future STEM studies by students - Ugh
