One explanation is the nature of crime has shifted. Due to the pandemic and office closures, downtown emptied to foot traffic. And perpetrators of property crime shifted to residential areas. The data shows this clearly.pic.twitter.com/WbrW7DBRNE

Our city has changed visibly and by district. The surge in burglaries is disproportionately affecting certain regions. 47.44% increase in Taraval. 14.36% increase in Mission. 13.73% increase in Bayview. 12.92% increase in Ingleside.

The response from law enforcement has not been commensurate. The clearance rate was 11.9% last year. The clearance rate was 10.2% this year. Less and less burglaries are being held accountable.
