1/ Studies suggest that social media is engineered to be addictive. Every time we feel a notification in our pocket or see likes on our post we get a dopamine hit. Thus, many have come to the normative conclusion that social media is toxic b/c we're being “gamed” psychologically.

2/ Yet it is also the case that many professional musicians familiar with music theory, technique and production will admit that popular music is largely designed to deliver dopamine hits as effectively as possible (e.g. bass drops, 4-chord songs & triplets added for excitement).

End/ Most of us react positively to someone's ability to generate compelling music (unlike the usual complaints about the manipulative nature of social media engineering). I'm not suggesting that I know what to make of this, but I do think it is a comparison worthy of our time.

This is why many of us knowledgeable in music theory hate pop (corporate) music. Labels are engineering stimulating patterns, and using mass-appealing singers (Ariana grande, Adele, Beyoncé), in order to sell music and ideas. + hacking the sexual biological impulse.
