The lack of a small tribal setting with direct accountability to the group, is costing us immensely. The manipulative personality type is able to compete across hierarchies he/she should not have access to. Have seen many of these people in my professional life.
Adding layers of complexity on top of the underlying behavior can only obfuscate it.

Why? The problem is that the reputation cost of bad behavior is not enough to stop them. Reputation is just information. Tech is great at collecting, organizing and displaying info, including reputation. It’s how AirBnb made it safe to stay at stranger’s houses (and host them)

I agree that it improve from where it is now. But it will never provide the level of accountability and trust necessary for survival in a tribal setting. It’s a layer on top that adds noise to the signal.

At the risk of sounding obtuse, we don’t live in a tribal setting anymore though. So the question isn’t how reputation and accountability falls short of that standard but rather how we can improve those things for our world.
