Why do so many teenagers go through an overly dramatic dark stage? I don't mean that they don't genuinely feel it, but I'm reading this Reddit thread on old cringe and it's basically everyone remembering being embarrassingly emo. I was homeschooled and the bug bit me too.

Is it like a stage in human progression where you learn how to feel long term sadness and then cause it's the first time, you go overboard?

I remember feeling deeply misunderstood. Is it because society chronically misunderstands teenagers? Is the teenagers darkness phase an adjustment to lack of empathy in society?

It’s because current society offers few paths to becoming a contributing member of a group, who provides meaningful labor/effort, for meaningful goals. For which we are biologically wired. The vast majority of tasks performed today are not worth performing.pic.twitter.com/qVMJwoUvDe

Yes it's a collusion of identities that coalesces into what we call our identity. I don't think we really "grow out of" the emo stage as much as we learn how to harness and direct our energy more efficiently to yield better results. If we're lucky.

There’s entire industries, employing millions of people, performing tasks that were better off not being performed. The teenager desires mentorship, and a path to meaning.
