Have you read this one?

No
@MimeticValue has urged me to do so. Waiting for it to arrive along the rest of the 50 or so books I ordred this month.

We highlighted the exact same passages here lol... I saw that connection too and even wrote "Eliade Shamanism" in the margins.
-
Haha. It’s remarkable how many people have written off shamanism. Constantly is in my mind as “what’s something you know is valuable that few people agree with you on”.

Interesting. Lovely actually. However the (perhaps?) dismissive comment about acting is based on a very skewed understanding of performance theory. From Stanislavsky to Adler/Strasberg to Meisner to Mamet and others today like Tony Meindl, there are various levels of trance/flow.
-
I don't think it's dismissive. He's saying that acting is part of everyone's ontology of desire.
-
I guess I’m responding to the idea that genuine trance is aligned with the prehistory and origins of theatre that apparently Shakespeare taps into but that ‘Western’ theatre is ignorant of. Self-dispossession is not necessarily something missing from Western acting approaches.
-
And I say this is a dude who has spent most of his life involved in theatre/acting/acting training/etc. Seeking that trance-like state is very much endogenous within many Western acting practices.
-
He's saying that element is there, but not anywhere near the level of an actual shamanic ecstatic dance. It's not merely trance-like or a flow state, it's a complete trance--Dionysian ritual madness. Current methods are more Apollonian than that on the scale.
-
Yeah that’s the thing... I’m not so sure. I get it. But having experienced the ecstasy and talked with others about it, it’s pretty much ritual madness but in a different form haha. I’m just not sure we are as Apollonian as we might think we are, if that makes sense?
-
Do you think your experience is common? It doesn't seem to be true for the acting of most movie, TV show, or commercial scenes.
-
Haha yeah, most actors are terrible. Sorry, mean. But it’s true. I think real artists, actors seeking real ‘truth’ in performance are at least seeking that depth. The problem comes when acting is a means to being famous. Then it’s superficial. Plus, when acting is just 1/2
