Which uses more energy: a 10 year old oak tree or a 2 year old oak tree? Why?

Looking at them as separate strikes me as wrong-minded. What’s the purpose in comparing energy? To move energy from one location to another? Why? Is there really separate energy at all?

No, all energy is singular - the transfer/flow is quantifiable and comparable. I'm not sure I understand the other questions. Can you elaborate?

To answer your q, the 10yr old tree has processed more information, therefore more energy than the 2yr old tree. But only if you draw an arbitrary line somewhere in between the two trees. Additionally, you’d have to draw another arbitrary line in time to address your question.
