Any productivity innovation in tech that renders a meaningful % of programmers unnecessary, will cause an economic crisis. Automation of data analysis or programming is a systemic threat to the economy as it will drive profits into an ever contracting funnel. (Blockchain?)
My point is that just because there is an option that might be of higher utility to many, doesn’t not mean it will be chosen. Especially when the decision will be up to a few (or determined by profit motive). Seems to me the highest utility for shareholders is the path chosen.

I understand your point and that makes sense. Profit motive does neglect many kinds of good work which isn't immediately profitable. But the profit motive also rewards many kinds of good work. There might be an infinite amount of profitable good work just waiting to be funded.
