It’s this type of thinking that has infected “science”. “Happiness” is not a relevant thing to measure, fulfillment is. You cannot have fulfillment without highs and lows. Measuring cortisol levels does nothing.

Under your definition we can introduce fulfillment to captive animals by stressing them out. Give them parasites, chop off a limb, starve them for a week, etc. That’s cruel but at least animals will feel more fulfilled. Or something.
