I have no clue where you're seeing these "higher-end manufacturing jobs." But I've been on the ground in all these midwestern areas now multiple times. Many look like apocalyptic dump sites with closed plants, storefronts, and rows of empty land where homes used to be.

Whatever research or statistics your looking at is not the real picture. That's why a con man named Trump was able to win a majority of those states--because they've been economically reeling for 2-3 decades as people like you spread nonsense about trade supposedly helping them.

Try telling 2 people who used to be able to support family off middle class salary but are now working 2-3 part time jobs w/ shitty healthcare (if even that). I've met thousands of these people--it's not anecdotal. This is how majority of blue-collar workers have been effected

So tell me what those other forces are that have made Rust Belt workers and other blue-collar workers lives so tough. I honestly would love to know. By the way: part of the problem with simply relying on research and statistics--you miss large part of the puzzle: actual people

This was one of MAJOR reasons pollsters got 2016 so wrong. They all laughed at thought of Trump winning. Even close to Election Day, most pollsters and pundits thought it a joke. Very few actually went out into the middle of the country to see the lawn signs, speak to the people

Research/statistics also say economy doing well-but reality shows highest level of income inequality ever; high underemployment, high underinsured (& insured), staggering levels of lobbying/political corruption. Research, when not applied to real person observation, is not ideal

Ok this statement shows me your head is in the clouds. I was in the field covering these places and interviewing thousands of people. Racism played a part but wasn't even close to the reason he won. Can't have Twitter debates with people not living in reality.

Why do u think
@BernieSanders upset@HillaryClinton in MI? Was that racism too? No--NAFTA/trade! I was there...dozens of rallies in midwest. Trade has DECIMATED these areas way more than ur willing to even consider. Trump seized on that. This is why he narrowly won MI, WI, PA.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Did anti-immigrant/misogynist sentiments from Trump have a role. Absolutely! But that was secondary 2 ECONOMIC issues. Trump preyed on economic insecurity, hopelessness, & fury. Ppl like u cite racism bc you don't want 2 face the realities of ppl finally fed up w/ oligarchy

Trump is CERTAINLY not the answer, but he conned people into thinking he was. If anything his FAKE anti-establishment, anti-political puppets message won over blue collar workers way more than dog whistling did
