Eliot Engel doesn't really fit his district and he's got a primary challenge. That said, the fact that it takes the entire left-wing apparatus and the NYT going all in for his opponent doesn't reflect strength for leftwing institutional power.

(1) Progressives are simply not a coherent ideological bloc, which makes them irrelevant regardless of their numbers. (2) Progressives keep losing overwhelmingly in primaries. (3) No one cares what progressives think because they don't pay attention to policy or details.

Just being progressive doesn't overturn electoral realities surrounding fundraising and name recognition. In a typical congressional primary 50-60% of voters even know the INCUMBENT's name by primary day. We are definitely seeing a more assertive left, races like Eastman prove it
